STUDY METHODS

OUBS courses and qualifications are designed to suit busy and professional people who want to improve their skills or career prospects. We offer a variety of levels from our prestigious MBA for experienced managers to the open entry Certificates or Open University undergraduate degrees. Written and developed specifically for delivery via distance learning, the quality of our study materials is world-renowned.

What does distance learning really mean?

Distance learning is a term that is commonly misunderstood. It differs from correspondence or e-learning courses in that our study methods offer you support and a blend of materials and resources. You can choose to study when and where your lifestyle allows, and access to your tutor and other students means you need never feel isolated. Tutorial groups and residential schools give you the opportunity to discuss issues and network face to face.

What materials will I receive?

Because OUBS courses are written specifically for distance learning, they are produced in a variety of media to make your learning experience stimulating and varied. Your course books will be accompanied by a Study Guide, to help you get the most from your studies. Course materials can also include CD-ROMs, video tapes, audio tapes and the course website. OUBS courses include all the materials you need to complete your studies and the cost is included in the basic fee.

How will we support you?

You will be allocated a tutor at the beginning of your course who will be accessible by email, phone or post. Tutors will be allocated up to 16 students for each course presentation and depending on location, will normally try to organise tutorials and seminars. Your tutor will give you feedback on your coursework (Tutor Marked Assignments or TMAs) and will encourage you throughout your studies.

Will you get the chance to meet other students?

Depending on location, your tutor may organise tutorial sessions and seminars at which you can meet fellow students. You will have access to «First Class», our online conferencing facility. Some courses hold Residential Schools, normally 2-5 days and usually held over a weekend to minimise disruption to your working life. These workshops can help you to crystallise your thoughts on the course, and network with other students.

Optional online study

Where practical issues, such as location, do not allow you to attend tutorials and residential schools, there are online alternatives to some of our courses. See the full course description for more details.
